With high pressure and
light winds forecast for yesterday I had planned to do some aerial photography
in the afternoon. However the day turned out to be rather dull and
grey, with very low cloud affecting the island, so 'Plan B' turned out
to be a walk around the Ballaugh Curraghs wetlands area, which was indeed
very wet! I've been fascinated by this area for years and over ten
years ago did a special Island Images feature on the wetland through the
year which can be found
here. Although most of the time yesterday the weather was rather dull,
the sun did try and break through for a while, giving some lovely soft
light effects.

After a couple of rather
dull days, the sun broke out around the middle of the day yesterday and
after fulfilling a couple of commitments I though there was still just
enough time to get a quick bit of aerial photography done so long as I
didn't travel to far from home. Looking at the likely sun angles
I decide to go to Keristal, just to the north of Port Soderick. The
sun was a bit low but did highlight the rugged cliffs in the area.

Two 'out of my window
views'. The one on the left was taken yesterday afternoon and was
about as good as it got over the last couple of days, you can just see
the lower part of Douglas Head. Most of the time were were in the clouds
and could hardly see across to the other side of the road! On the
right is this morning, can't see the mountains of north Wales quite, but
a vast improvement anyway. Panasonic TZ200 9/11/20 & 10/11/20

These pictures were
taken yesterday afternoon on a visit to the Calf Sound for lunch at the
cafe. Overall it was a rather dull day with occasional rain showers
passing through, but a few brighter spells as well. Panasonic TZ200

I t was generally rather
a dull day yesterday, with strong to gale force winds and heavy rain showers
passing through. I had a quick stroll around the Battery Pier and
Douglas Head Lighthouse areas in the early afternoon and took these shots.

After a morning with
low cloud, gale force winds and horizontal rain, things improved around
lunchtime and I headed across to Niarbyl hoping for some nice lighting
before sunset. Unfortunately it had clouded over again before I arrived
there and there was still a very strong wind blowing, but I did see the
sun set!

Yesterday afternoon
the strong to gale force winds we had been experiencing recently died down
to a gentle breeze and I set off to Ramsey intending to carry out some
aerial photography. Unfortunately, almost as soon as I arrived it
started to rain, which grounded me! However I did get a couple of
ground shots before the rain started. Panasonic TZ200 19/11/20

The weather wasn't great
yesterday with heavy rain and strong winds in the morning but it improved
a little by the middle of the day when we went for lunch at the Milntown
House Cafe on the outskirts of Ramsey. Afterwards we went into town
and I took these shots which are mainly local fishing vessels.

23rd November
After a couple of weeks
of unsuitable weather for drone flying, yesterday morning was bright and
sunny and the wind had died down to a fresh breeze, so I set out for Port
St Mary to carry out some aerial photography with the Phantom 4.
One problem that I've noticed with drone photography at these latitudes
over the winter lighting season is that the sun is always at a low angle
(at the moment not getting above 15 degrees over the horizon), which from
ground level normally results in good images. However, from
the air at low altitudes this produces high levels of light on buildings
but low levels on the usually considerably darker ground which makes for
a very 'contrasty' end picture. One solution is to shoot multiple
pictures at varying exposures (AEB) and then combine on the computer into
one picture, which I have done on several of the ones below. DJI

A sunny and calm morning
after the previous day had been very windy with torrential rain for a time
in the afternoon. I took the little Spark drone to Laxey and the
first flight was from the beach and close to high tide. DJI Spark

Moving further up the
valley to the area of the Great Laxey Mine, to take some shots of the 'Lady
Isabella', the world famous Laxey Wheel.
Moving back down the
valley to take a look at the 'other' Laxey waterwheel, the Lady Evelyn.
Originally constructed in 1865 to serve the Snaefell Mine much further
up the valley, it was sold to a company in Cornwall when the mine closed
in 1910 and only returned to the island for rebuilding 2003. It is
by the Laxey River in the public garden area that was formerly the washing
floors for the Great Laxey Mine and utilised several water wheels to power
machinery.

The nice weather from
Wednesday morning at Laxey continued into the afternoon and I set off for
Niarbyl with the Spark drone hoping to get some aerial shots before sunset,
which is now only just past 4 o'clock. Quite different weather than
the last time I was there on the 18th!
